Dream Team Triathlon kicked off our first season of training in early March 2012. With a dozen or so Athens and Atlanta area youth ready to swim, bike and run their way across north Georgia, we set our sites on the YWCO Kids Tri the Y youth triathlon as our inaugural team event.
Word was quickly spreading around Athens, Atlanta and Augusta about the benefits of training and racing under the guidance and support of our coaches, parents and team members. Membership quickly grew and we arrived at our first race of the season with more than 20 youth athletes. With the success of the YWCO Kids Tri the Y triathlon and the growing interest in youth endurance sports, our team has continued to grow and our membership has now exceeded 65 members.
Our athletes and parents have become a close knit group of friends and take great pride in supporting endurance sports, healthy living and fun. Our focus is building confidence in our youth and teaching them the value of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. Our primary incentive is to have fun.
Kids love awards, we get that. While we are always proud of our athletes when they earn a podium spot or qualify for IronKids Nationals, our main objective is teaching kids the basics so they can enjoy the sport of triathlon for a lifetime. We coach by example and encourage our athletes to spread the word about healthy living and give back to the sport of triathlon.
With the popularity of both youth endurance sports and Dream Team Triathlon, we are expecting our membership to exceed 75 athletes by the end of the 2013 season. We look forward to much more training, racing and volunteerism across Athens, Atlanta and Augusta in the months to come.
